HALLWAY/STAGE/SENTINELS, 2024 Figure #2, Figure #3
I constructed two large structures in my studio: a hallway and a platform. Viewers frequently asked how the two were related, searching for a coherent framework. I could not provide one. Only after both were built, positioned in tension, one pressing into the other, did something begin to emerge. What mattered was not the structures themselves, but the space between them: a charged interval that functioned simultaneously as boundary, threshold, and site of encounter. That space became a way of understanding my own position as a visual artist working from a background in theater, negotiating disciplines, languages, and modes of orientation and attention. The surveilling figures perched on oscillating fans, peer over the top of the walls. A scale model of my studio sits on the stage directly under a vibrating motor, suspended from the ceiling with latex tubing. The motor, bouncing against the floor of the model, slowly digs its way into the surface.
